Book Review: Perfect Rigor, by Masha Gessen.
Boston/New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2009.

Perfect Rigor is a book about Grigori Perelman [In Russian: Григорий Яковлевич Перельман] (b. 1966), the Russian mathematician who solved the Poincaré Conjecture -- solved, that is, a problem devised in 1904 by the French scientist Henri Poincaré and labored over by mathematicians for a century thereafter. Other mathematicians made contributions to the solution, but Perelman, by all accounts, solved it, for which he was awarded the Fields medal (the highest honor in mathematics) and will probably be granted a $1 million prize from the Clay Mathematics Institute. Perelman, however, for inscrutable reasons of his own that Gessen describes, refused the Fields Medal (see also Russian Notes for August 23) and in all probability will turn down the million dollars.

Gessen's book combines several motifs:

1) A description of the economic, political and moral bankruptcy of the Soviet Union during its death throes in the 1970s and 1980s when Perelman was growing up and studying mathematics in Leningrad. This is important, because it is now common to read in the west that the introduction of market reforms in Russia after the dissolution of the USSR led to the collapse of a well-oiled machine that provided free medical care and equal opportunities to all of its citizens. There was, of course, an economic downturn in Russia in the the early 1990s, but this occurred because the Soviet government in a few years managed to squander all of the wealth and property acquired in Russia over the preceding 1000 years. It was unrealistic to believe, as many Russians unfortunately did, that any reforms, market or otherwise, could rebuild the country's economy in a year or two. 2) An exposé of Antisemitism in the Soviet Union, and especially in the Soviet mathematics community. In this respect Perfect Rigor makes an excellent companion to the 1978 work by Grigori Freiman, It Seems I Am A Jew: A Samizdat Essay on Soviet Mathematics, which chronicles antisemitism in the Soviet math world roughly from World War II to the 1970s. The 1980 English translation of this essay, to which Gessen makes reference in her endnotes, is out of print but available from used book sellers via Amazon.com. Gessen continues Freiman's story to the end of the Soviet era. Each author describes how Soviet authorities would limit the number of Jewish students admitted to prestigious institutes or invited to international Math Olympiads, and prevent Jewish professors from receiving faculty appointments or traveling abroad to attend conferences. Often Jewish candidates were identified for discrimination by their Jewish-sounding surnames, and "Perelman" fell into this category. The success that Grigori Perelman achieved early in his career is the more impressive for having been attained in such a context.

3) A profile of the legendary (according to Gessen) Russian math teacher Sergei Rukshin, who managed, on Perelman's behalf, to negotiate the Soviet school system with its emphasis on a uniform curriculum and equal outcomes for all students regardless of talent. As Gessen writes, "That Russia produced some of the twentieth century's greatest mathematicians is, plainly, a miracle" (p. 3).

4) An overview of the Poincaré Conjecture. This portion of the book was incomprehensible to me, not, I suspect, because it was badly written, but because I have, as William S. Burroughs once wrote, "a definite blind spot for mathematics or anything mechanical."

5) A biography of Grigori Perelman. It is not an authorized biography: Perelman shuns publicity, claims to have abandoned mathematics, despises writers, and evidently speaks to no-one except his mother. Nonetheless, Gessen interviewed many of the people that knew Perelman during his active math phase, from former friends and teachers in Russia to mathematicians in Israel and the United States. She creates a portrait of a precocious boy who managed, with the help of teachers and fellow-mathematicians, to survive the Soviet school system, receive the equivalent of a doctorate in mathematics, and make a mark in the conventional academic math world of classes, conferences and journals before going underground in 2006.

6) A contribution to the literature of eccentric prodigies in chess, music and mathematics, who often excel in their art at an early age but tend not to do very well in other areas of their lives. Perelman brings to mind Luzhin, the chess-playing protagonist of Vladimir Nabokov's The Defense [Защита Лужина], who displays similarly brilliant but self-destructive tendencies. Gessen undoubtedly would have preferred to end her book with a conclusion to the Clay prize story, but lacking this, she ends instead with some interesting speculation on the nature of Perelman's personality.

My only complaint about Perfect Rigor is that it's too short -- I would have liked to read more about the Soviet school system and maybe even the Poincaré Conjecture -- it's possible that I could have grasped a longer and more thorough explanation. But I suspect this would have been commercial suicide. In any case I recommend the book highly.
