World Cup News for Sunday, July 15, 2018

If you watched the World Cup final between France and Croatia, you know by now that protesters invaded the pitch around the 52nd minute of the match. It turns out that these protesters were the Russian rock group Pussy Riot, which is famous for staging protests in public places. Or in any case Pussy Riot claimed responsibility, and simultaneously posted four demands on social media. Three of them were unremarkable: release political prisoners, stop illegal arrests at rallies, allow political competition in the country. The fourth demand, however, as reported by the Independent and other outlets, may have raised a few eyebrows: “Do not put for husky.” It turns out that this is a translation, no doubt provided by Google Translate or some similar service, of the Russian phrase Не сажать за лайки. In reality the meaning of this phrase is: do not arrest people for likes, i. e., liking certain content on social media. The translation site missed on two words: сажать, which means to put someone (such as a small child) in a sitting position but also, colloquially, to put someone in prison; and лайки, which can mean either husky dogs or (in this case) likes on social media. There have, indeed, been cases of arrests for likes, including that of a doctor in the Khabarovsk region that was reported on July 13.

With that we will conclude our World Cup Editions and return tomorrow to our normal format.
