RFE/Radio Liberty: “Russian lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a bill that would enable the government to brand some individual journalists and bloggers — not only media outlets — as foreign agents. The bill, passed in the first of three readings in the State Duma on January 12, allows the Justice Ministry to designate people who are ‘performing the function of a media outlet’ as foreign agents.”

Interfax: “Longer than usual voting ballots might have to be printed for the upcoming presidential elections in Russia in March 2018, as up to 20 people might hypothetically run in them, Russian Central Elections Commission (CEC) Chairperson Ella Pamfilova said on Saturday.”

JTA: “Arkady Wajspapir, a key figure in the 1943 uprising at the Sobibor death camp, died in Kiev at the age of 96. Wajspapir killed at least one Nazi soldier during the uprising — the most bold and daring act by Jewish inmates, according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.”
